Great opportunity for international artists:?Culture is the true
identity power. In this context the major role of the artists is to
promote through art cultural?diversity and preserve common values.
Intercultural dialogue through art is an important instrument. Art is
not a means - art is a space in which everything is possible, in which
different times, subjects and objects, sometimes divergent,?coexist. And
not just coexist, but communicate and create values. Through art,
culture, tolerance, initiating a dialogue among nations, among various
artistic expressions, a real dialog among real people. Culture
communicates in the?language of heart, which is understood by everybody.
For artists, communication is essential - both with the audience?- the
art consumer, and with representatives of national and international art
groups.

Call for Applications & open house

Join us for an Open House on November 6, 2007. Email vap@mit.edu or call
617-253-5229
for information.

The MIT Visual Arts Program (VAP) seeks talented, curiosity-driven and
creative students to apply for upcoming academic year. This selective
two-year program grants successful participants a Master of Science in
Visual Studies (SMVisS) degree. Founded in 1988, VAP is embedded in MIT
under the aegis of the School of Architecture and Planning and within
the Department of Architecture. This unique position encourages a wealth
of interdisciplinary exploration and research.

The Program
The MIT Visual Arts Program operates as a production- and
education-based laboratory within the context of an advanced
technological community. Our program explores the wider role and
relevance of art in society and considers artistic practice as knowledge
production, thus promoting an approach that challenges traditional
genres and the limits of the gallery/museum context. Studio
investigations and artistic research are realized through performance,
video, photography, manufactured objects, electronic systems,
interrogative design, as well as through experimental media and new
genre. Central to the curriculum is the potential for students to concur
with other areas of the MIT community. There are endless opportunities
to develop collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships with programs
and labs in architecture, urban planning, media arts and sciences,
mechanical engineering and
other disciplines.

Students & Alumni
Students are encouraged to develop their own artistic vision and to
freely explore the unparalleled research and technological resources
available at MIT. Recent areas of critical research engage in the role
of art and culture in today's society, from a radio broadcast vehicle
(Max Goldfarb '06) to rethinking knowledge production and transmission
through artistic means (Hope Ginsburg '07). Students participate in
outside exhibitions, and projects were recognized through a number of
prestigious awards. Alumni have secured coveted fellowships and teaching
positions around the globe, and have gained international recognition
through exhibitions and events. Hiroharu Mori '04 participated in the
2007 Venice Biennial, Jennifer Allora '03, along with Guillermo
Calzadilla, participated in the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, the
Istanbul Biennial and the 8th Sharjah Biennial, all in 2007, and Jill
Magid '00 had a solo show at the Gagosian Gallery, New York.

Faculty
Instructors are world-renowned artists with active, international
careers in artistic production, as well as a strong interest in
cross-discipline debate and modes of production. Director and Professor,
Ute Meta Bauer, is the Director of SITAC VI 2008 in Mexico City, was
Co-Curator of Documenta11 and Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin
Biennial. Professor Joan Jonas has a current solo exhibition at MACBA
(Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona). Professor Krzysztof Wodiczko,
Director of CAVS (Center for Advanced Visual Studies) and head of MIT's
Interrogative Design Workshop, has a major retrospective exhibition
upcoming at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas.
Professor Wendy Jacob has exhibited at Centre Georges-Pompidou and the
Whitney Museum of American Art. Visiting Professor Regina Moeller has
participated at APERTO, Venice Biennale, Manifesta and at the 3rd
Berlin Biennial.

Visiting Professor Antoni Muntadas is an internationally renowned artist
who represented Spain in the 2005 Venice Biennale. Lecturers Andrea
Frank (Photography), Joe Gibbons (Video) and Jae Rhim Lee (Mixed Media)
are prominent practitioners within their fields and participate in
exhibitions worldwide. In addition, visiting artists and critics,
symposia, workshops, screenings, as well as a cross-disciplinary public
lecture series, all enrich the program by addressing topics related to
current research initiatives.

Artists/cultural producers with diverse backgrounds and experience who
are interested in pursuing innovative artistic cross-disciplinary
practice and research are encouraged to apply. The deadline is December
15, 2007.
